WHAT IS SHOULDER ARTHROSIS?
Shoulder arthrosis (omarthrosis) is degeneration due to wear and tear of the shoulder joint, i.e. damage and wear of the cartilage occurs. As a result, the shoulder socket and the head of the humerus no longer slide, but the bones rub directly against each other.
HOW DOES OMARTHROSIS DEVELOP?
Both years of overuse and poorly healed injuries to the shoulder can lead to joint wear. Damage to the rotator cuff can also lead to osteoarthritis. The cause of this is the altered biomechanics of the shoulder.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
Typical of osteoarthritis is pain at night and at rest. Increasing restriction of movement, especially in external rotation, is also common. Push-ups or overhead activities can usually no longer be performed.
Welche Behandlungsmöglichkeiten gibt es?
Conservative therapy
At the beginning, conservative therapy measures are used to try to relieve the pain and reduce the restriction of movement. Conservative therapy measures include infiltrations with pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory drugs or products to improve cartilage metabolism (hyaluronic acid), physiotherapy and physical therapies.
Shoulder prosthesis
If the above-mentioned therapies do not have the desired effect and the pain especially disturbs the night's rest, a shoulder prosthesis is a good treatment option. It replaces the worn parts of the humeral head and glenoid cavity.
For a long time, the shoulder prosthesis had a bad reputation because the complication rate was high and the mobility after the operation often did not meet expectations. However, there have been many improvements in this area in recent years, so most of my patients are very satisfied with the results. I use personalised prostheses that are planned just for you. A 3D model is made of your shoulder so that the prosthesis can be optimally adapted for you.
